Here we will go through a fairly simple method that can be adopted to track PDF downloads. Google Analytics tracks page views on the website with the help of a tracking pixel on HTML pages. But this is not the case when it comes to PDF downloads.<\/p>\n

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO TRACK EVENTS USING GOOGLE TAG MANAGER\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

  1. The first step will be to install Google Tag Manager on your website. It is a fairly simple process. You will need to first create an account and container. You will also have to paste the Google Tag Manager code on every page of your website. Ensure that the first piece of code is placed as close to the opening <head> tag as possible and the second piece in the <body> tag.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    6.Click on \u2018NEW\u2019 and name the tag appropriately. Naming the tag using words like \u2018Download PDF\u2019, \u2018Button Click\u2019, etc. will help identify the tag easily later.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    7.Configure your tag by clicking the edit pencil icon in the \u2018Tag Configuration\u2019 section<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    4. Action (Refers to the actual action of the event) \u2013\u00a0PDF Download<\/em><\/li>\n
    5. Label (Refers to additional information for events that you want to track) \u2013\u00a0{{Click Text}}<\/em><\/li>\n
    6. Non \u2013 Interaction Hit as\u00a0True<\/em><\/li>\n
    7. Google Analytics Settings<\/li>\n
    8. Select -> New Variable \u2013 Add Google analytics tracking UA code<\/li>\n
    9. Tracking Code as\u00a0Google UA Code<\/em><\/li>\n
    10. Tag configuration will resemble this<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. \u2018Click \u2013 All Elements \u2019 as your trigger type under the \u2018Click\u2019 section<\/li>\n
      2. This trigger fires on: Some Clicks<\/li>\n
      3. Setup your rule with the drop downs and text fields: \u2018click URL\u2019 \u2018contains\u2019 \u2018.pdf\u2019<\/li>\n
      4. Save the trigger.<\/li>\n
      5. Trigger configuration will resemble this<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        To check if the tags are firing correctly click on the PDF download link on your live site to trigger the event.<\/p>\n

        You can view Google Tag Manager in \u2018Preview Mode\u2019 so you can debug and test with real-time tracking in Google Analytics.<\/p>\n

        Navigate to the Google Analytics window and click on \u2018Real time events\u2019. Here you will see the event tracking analytics.<\/p>\n
